The Ultimate Elevator Speech

An “elevator speech” is a 30 second summary of what your business offers or what you do for your business. The term comes from the idea that we sometimes meet important people in elevators and only have less than a minute before they leave.  An “elevator speech” is an opportunity to get your point across in a timely manner, and to tell someone what it is you do in a way that will be memorable.

It is a short speech that is worth memorizing. In the time span of 30 seconds you can let those you come in contact with know what your skills, interests, and future goals are. However, 30 seconds is barely enough time to say your name, let alone give a small speech, so choosing the words and memorizing it is invaluable.

Don’t worry about being cheesy, but try not to be vague. People want direct answers, not fancy adjectives. Do your best to make it unique, but down to earth. Invite friends and colleagues to help you edit your speech, as well as practice saying it out loud.

Questions to answer to guide you to the ultimate elevator speech:

  • What do you do in ten words or less?
  • Who do you serve and who is your ideal client?
  • What do your customers need from you? Why are they seeking you out?
  • What are the key benefits your customer receives from working with you or purchasing your product? (What’s in it for them?)
  • Why are you different?

Now pear it down to a 30 second draft.
Say it out loud then let it sit.
Edit it again.
Did I mention saying it out loud? ;)
Record it and listen to yourself.
Edit it again, then finalize it.
Memorize it and practice it every time you get the chance.
Stay open to improvement and changes.
